Student Balance Transfer Credit Cards

Below you can compare student credit cards offering 0% APR balance transfers.  In general, student balance transfer credit cards charge a 3 to 5% balance transfer fee and offer 0% balance transfer rates for up to 1 year. Some credit cards that offer balance transfers to college students also offer 0% cash advances.  While tempting, 0% APR cash advances can become quite expensive.  Cash advances not only cincur 3 to 5% fees, but are charged a much higher interest rate once the 0% introductory rate expires. If your credit card company offers you a cash advance, don’t take it.

Student Balance Transfer Tips

  1. When you apply online for a student credit card and initiate a balance transfer, be sure to continue making payments on your previous credit card until the 0% APR balance transfer clears.  You can verify that your balance transfer has cleared by checking the statement of your high interest credit card online.  Missing a single payment can negatively impact your credit score, so its better to be careful than take the risk of being late.
  2. If you are a college student with an established credit history and income, you may be able to qualify for a regular credit card. These cards offer longer 0% introductory rates of up to 1 year and may come with lower long term interest rates.
  3. If you are approved for a new student credit card, keep your old credit card open (unless it charges an annual fee). Keeping your old account open will lengthen your credit history and can have positive long term effects on your credit score. Just be careful not to run up a new balance on your old credit card.
  4. Presently, 99% of all credit cards charge a balance transfer fee. This amounts to $3 to $5 for every $100 you transfer to a new card. While a nuisance, the money you will save with a 0% APR more than offsets this fee.
  5. Keep an eye on your credit score. The sooner you start monitoring your credit, the better. There are a number of free credit tools you can use for 30 days at no cost.
