When a retailer offers a credit card, customers look for both rewards and special features. Cardholders expect bonus rewards when shopping at that retailer, plus access to exclusive services. Barclaysbanks and specialty outdoor clothing retailer L.L. Bean offer a co-branded Visa card that includes all of these features.

How this card works

For each dollar spent, cardholders receive one point in the L.L. Bean rewards program, and triple points are received for spending at L.L. Bean stores and at their online outlet. Once 1,000 points are earned, customers will be sent a coupon good for $10 off of their next L.L. Bean purchase.

Other benefits include free monogramming of purchases and free shipping of returns. In addition, cardholders are eligible to receive invitations to exclusive sales and special offers.

There is no annual fee for this card, but there is a 3% foreign transaction fee imposed on all charges processed outside of the United States.

The key features here are the free monogramming and free return shipping. Considering that there is no annual fee for this card, those are nice features to have.

There is no sign-up bonus or promotional financing offer for this card, and 1% rewards are pretty marginal. And especially when you consider that the rewards are only for use at L.L. Bean, it is difficult to imagine why anyone would use this card over other reward cards for non-L.L. Bean purchaese. And finally, this card has higher interest rates than other more competitive non-reward credit cards.

Who this card is for

This card will work for fans of L.L. Bean who like free monogramming and free return shipping. I suppose the special offers might be nice as well. But other cardholders should probably focus on reward cards not associated with retailers, and earn far more valuable points, miles, or cash back.

But by offering some valuable features and not charging an annual fee, this card can make sense, but only for L.L. Bean’s best customers.
