Professional football returned in 2012 to replacement referees that drew the fan’s ire. Now that the real refs are back on the field, fans are once again free to focus on their enjoyment of the game. Barclays Bank and the NFL offer their NFL Extra Points Card that offers fans a nice sign up bonus and lets cardholders earn double points on all NFL purchases as well as the chance to redeem points for statement credits or exclusive rewards.
How the NFL Extra Points Card Works
New applicants earn 10,000 points worth $100 as a sign up bonus after their card’s first use. (Also, cardholders who are DirectTV subscribers can receive the NFL Sunday Ticket package for free if they make $750 worth of purchases before the end of the year.)
Cardholders then earn one point in the NFL Rewards program for every dollar spent. Purchases of NFL gear from stores, online shops, or in stadiums earn two points per dollar. Points can then be redeemed for statement credits at a rate of one cent per point, essentially making this a cash back credit card as well.
Aside from these standard features, cardholders can also redeem points for exclusive NFL experiences that range from stadium tours to Superbowl tickets.
New cardholders will also receive a 0% APR introductory financing offer on both new purchases and balance transfers for 12 months. This is an average 0% introductory rate promotion, so cardholder’s with debt or who may take on debt soon may fare better with one of the longer lasting 0% credit card promotions currently available. These last 15-18 months. (View details on these cards here.)
Advantages & Disadvantages
The rate of return on this card is marginal at 1% for most purchases, but at least it can be redeemed for statement credits. What really makes this card stand out is some of the NFL experience options such as two seats on the 50-yard line for 25,000 points. This is definitely worth much more than a $250 statement credit, especially if the league offers decent availability for marquis matchups.
Two Superbowl tickets for 200,000 points could also be a great deal if they truly make these available to cardholders.
In many cases, cards like the Chase Freedom and Citi Dividend will offer more value. These cards come with similar cash back sign up bonuses and more generous promotional financing. In addition, they offer bonus categories of spending each quarter that earn 5% cash back, while the NFL card only offers 2% on NFL purchases.
