Tammy,

First, I would try calling a few more times and asking to speak with managers. If that doesn't work and you can afford to pay this card off imediately, then you should absolutely do so. If not, you should strongly consider doing a 0% APR balance transfer. Ironically, Citi offers the longest 0% deals, but Discover-which is a much better company-has deals that last 18 months. Depending on your current balance, a balance transfer could easily save you a few hundred dollars.

We have our "business card" with Citibank..... too bad.... Our rate went from 8.24 to 29.99 with one late payment (late 2 days.) After going back over all my records, there is no "specific" due date!!!!! Due date on the previous month was the 8th - they moved it back to the 5th for one month.... GOTTCHA!!!! When I called, to inquire..... "no none of the CARD Act applies to business cards." Well that's just GREAT !!!! Note to self...... THERE'S ALWAYS a CATCH!!! Shame on you CitiBank.....your day is coming!

I have ALWAYS paid on time and more than the min. amt. due . I was ONE DAY late with an online payment. The payment dates were always on the same day , then this particular month the due date is changed ??? Plus , that month I did NOT get my usual email notification of payment due !They jacked my rate from 11.99 to 29.99 !!! I got some crocking bull story about the due dates. I have been paying this outlandish rate for almost 8 months now. I am going to ask for it to be returned to my previous rate , I read that after a certain amt of time making payments on time , they are obliged to give you your old rate back .....WE'LL SEE!
I am paying the entire balance off in another month or 2 , and I will make it CLEAR to citicards that I will NO longer carry a balance with them....
So SCREW YOU Citibank , your not going to make another dime off of me UNTIL you make your rates more reasonable.

we got this same letter in Nov., ours is going from 11.24 to 29.99, that's 166% increase!!! hello!!! we just went though this with my Discover card a few months ago, they didn't care either that after 15 yrs of loyal service I closed my acccnt. now this one? this puts us in a bind as my husband uses it for business and we don't get reimbursed for about a month+. I'm a student in my last yr and only work p/t, so we live paycheck to paycheck right now, like so many. we've had this card for 15yrs, it's been on auto-pay for 7yrs or so (so obviously no late fees), and when we get the reimb chks, those get applied to the accnt along with the auto-pay every month. so what do we do? fyi-citi made an agreement with congress that they would not raise aprs on credit holders in order to get bailout (taxpayer) monies.

Scott,

This story was in response to an earlier increase, not the present one. You can read more about recent Citibank credit card interest rate increases in other articles.

Hit them where it hurts. Cancel the card, pay it off, and never do business with them or their side companies again. Write your congressman, write yoru attorney general and let them know of their business ethics. You and I would be charged usury for these rates. After having this card over 20 years, mine was raised to 29.99% even though the libor rate is less than 0.5%(what is used to determine interest rates)So they are getting over 29.5% pure profit. After receiving billions of our tax money in bailout, they turn around and have call centers in India and the Philipines. When I couldn't understand the malaysian, I was yelled at and told to "listen closer". So much for the money going to stimulate OUR economy. Write letters, complain loud and long! That's the only way this company is going to listen.

Citibank is raising my rate of 10.24% to 14.99%. 9 months ago, I was notified my rate on my ATT Universal card, owned by Citi was going up 10%. I spoke to a supervisor who switched me to the Citi card with the 10.24%, still an increase by less than what they were trying to get from me. I just received the notice, as someone said due to the "current economic climate" they are changing my terms. I called and spoke to a very nasty rep, who said "take it or leave it". I asked why, if I'm an "exlempary" cardholder - Citi's words, I pay early if not on time, more than the minimum, they keep raising my credit line, I keep getting promotional offers from them, are they raising my apr? She said "so opt out", which I did. This is a Citi bank card, not a retail store card, so there greed is univeersal in their company - or should I say OUR COMPANY as they have our bailout tax dollars in order to pay their obscene bonuses and have their name on a baseball field.

The government's new bill does NOTHING for we consumers. And that it doesn't take effect until next year, because the banks needed more time to adjust makes me puke.

Another comment of Citibank: I am the bill payer at my office and we mailed my boss's payment 10 days ahead of the due date from california to nevada. Guess when they posted it? A day late. Yeah, right it takes 11 days to go one state away. Yet my parents in Omaha get their mail from me to Nebraska in 3 days. I believe they are also delaying posting of mailed payments.
